Who ruined defense?

Postby Dean-Atlanta » Fri Dec 23, 2022 2:29 pm

Many of you will find this interesting to see how trends in defense in the NFL take place, as we have seen things here in our league (2 DL defenses, the defensive plays with 2-3 DLs in zone pass coverage, etc.). How many times has innovation in play design "ruined" offense or defense in the PNFL?

Later in the video he says "all of these teams run 2-4 fronts." Sounds much like our 2-DL plays in the R&S folders.

My takeaway from this video, don't play "prevent" coverage all the time.

Defense has been "ruined" by design over the years because owners and TV want basketball on grass.

DBs aren't able to grab and intimidate receivers leaving them running all over the field. Offensive linemen are able to "hold" more than in the past which allows QBs to find the open receiver running around the field.

Defenses are not able to intimidate QBs like in the past because of roughing the passer rules changes.

Don't get me wrong, there are still solid defenses in the league and there are still players that can intimidate on defense. However, the glory days of the "NFL's Greatest Hits" is over. In fact, I think they are taking down statues of former players because many of their tackles would be penalties today.

Well, my Hogs under Barry Odom played a 3-5-3 type of defense, but the majority of the time against these Air Raid/Passing teams we would drop eight. The end result was about as you expected, a bend/don't break style of play predicated on forcing turnovers. In some games it worked great. For example, one year against Ole Miss we forced six interceptions. However, as injuries plagued our secondary and we had lesser talent on the field it showed and the lack of turnovers really hurt us.

I think that type of defense is ok as a situational or as a package within a more comprehensive scheme, but a prevent or drop eight style of defense shouldn't be used the majority of the time. I'm a bigger fan of the old Blitzburg or Sacksonville type defenses that focused on putting the QB on his butt.
