Jerry, while we all want to respect people and their lives and jobs, nothing prevents from you from emailing me or Charlie and giving me a specific player hours prior to your pick.

Let's say your pick is 3-4 away and its time for work. It's possible we get those picks quick and you are on the clock. And now you have 12 hours to draft. And lets also assume its a busy day at work and no way you can draft till 11pm which is 15 hours later. It's a real scenario and I get it.
But how about throwing some names out to us in preparation?

I could extend the window to 18 for early rounds but I am less worried about the 1st/2nd rds.
It's late where this gets messy. We cannot hold up a draft for 24-48 hours for the 97th pick!
Teams are going to have to make some early prep and email me with players/positions and request something if their pick is getting close.
If you are 1-6 picks out, expect there could be a run and you're on the clock.

Everyone is okay with 4-7 days, but 9-14 days is excessive and last year was especially bad.

Well, I think traditionally it's only a few people that hold us up for really looooong periods of time. The only time I usually hold someone up is if I'm working a trade. Is there maybe a way we can reach out to those few that have traditionally spent long periods of time on their picks and work something out on a more individual basis?

As a start, I can see:

1) 12-18 hr window for a pick that gradually is reduced by round
2) A potential extention for trading ONLY if the two parties reach out to the commissioner and request an extention.
3) Reach out to the owners taking over a day to make their picks and work out a compromise to keep us going BEFORE the draft starts.
4) If you know you will be out of town or working long hours during the draft, have a plan in place and make sure Rich and Charlie are aware.

Just to give you guys another picture of things …

The XFBS has been running its draft since June 27th. It's an email draft and coaches get 24 hours to pick. Our draft handles both rookies and FA signings so it goes more than 7 rounds. We are in the 12th round. I suspect we will be done sometime early next week around round 16 or so.

It took until July 6th to complete the equivalent of our 1st round … 10 days for about 22 picks.

So … yes … over a month via email, but the picks keep coming every 24 hours and the coaches all seem fine with how long it is taking. I think they'd get upset if I shortened it to 12 hours.

The PNFL definitely shouldn't complain if it finishes its 7 round draft in 4-14 days.

Steve, 22 picks in 10 days in completely unacceptable to me.
If this is going to drag for a month, forget it and we go to draftsock and be done with it.
I also do not like email because I want a clean record of it on the forum.

As Matt said, we are really talking about 2-3 guys who hold us up.
But we'll figure this out.
Much of this could be avoided if teams actually did their prep work and send Charlie or myself an email with some choices.
If you are 5-6 slots away then you can surely give us a few names/positions so we can move on.
In draftsock you have 90sec/60sec so cmon, make a damn list.

If we set a 12-hour time limit, most owners aren't going to use anywhere close to that full time, unless they're asleep, at work, or trying really hard to make a trade. Most of us (Walt being the main exception) are going to keep somewhat the same hours anyways, so we're not gonna care that the guy on the clock is asleep when we are too.

That said, make the penalty stiff for going over 12 hours, and don't give be lenient with second and third chances, so it's not abused.

I propose:
first time exceeding 12 hour time window: commish pick and time for all of that owner's subsequent picks reduced to 8 hours
second time exceeding (now 8) hour time window: commish pick and time for all of that owner's subsequent picks reduced to 4 hours
third time exceeding (now 4) hour time window: commish pick for rest of draft.

You are going to upset any coaches who work in shifts. I don't have a shift-based work schedule, but I get that it impacts people to the point of making some of them work all night and sleep all day. Got to keep that in mind.

I am currently switching to 4 3rds and 1 2nd each week. When you add on family stuff and sleep. I honestly struggle with the 24 hour windows XFBS especially when I missed an email.

I think Draftstock is the best way if you want the draft done in a reasonable time. I still think we should go back to the original set up for the forum draft. We have a schedule time for the draft but people can post their draft picks ahead of time if they want no time limit.

I also think we are missing the times we get together and chat. We used to do that during the draft and during the weekly games. While I like the convinces of the Tape games and forum draft at times I think we lose something doing it exclusively.

I am leaning toward doing nothing, no time limits.
