Option #2

We can render those problematic formations useless in the play editor, in the off season with the individual off-season play submissions from the weekly custom creators.

Charlie-49ers wrote:BTW, besides making the PNFL more realistic relative to the NFL, the other reason that I was considering a change is that the 2-DL pass defenses are fairly effective against the pass, and there has been ongoing complaints about the anemic nature of our passing game. That is why I thought that a reasonable compromise was to limit 2-DL to no more than 50% in any given category. No QB this past season had a Rating over 96.4, and only four QBs had a rating in the 90s. As such, I am still thinking that #1 is the best solution, if we go forward.

I am good with #1, and believe me, nobody wants to just line up and play more than I do right now so #2 sounds good too.

But here is a thought from a different angle. We are trying to help the QBs. Timing passes usually have good completion percentage. In recent seasons, we have upped the limit on timing passes from two per category to 50% per category.

What if we lowered the requirement from 5 per category on each offensive pass category to 4 per category, with a 50% limit on timing passes? Could that simply accomplish the goal of helping the QBs, while keeping the diversity of options in defensive strategy, and even encouraging innovative offensive play development in both the pass and the run?

But you can go 6 plays with 3 timing now. I just think 4 is too little and I use 6 most of the time anyway to gain the full 50% in most categories. The more we shrink the more someone can tinker with few plays to gain an advantage in a game that the other cannot adjust for in a sim league that week.

Timed passes can be both risky and rewarding for QBs, but perhaps the 15 yards limit on them needs an exception of some kind?

Maybe allow people to create timed passes where the end point can go up to 20 yards from the LOS so long as it is a LOB timed pass?

For PML, PMR, PMM ...

But that's exactly my point. 3 out of 6 may not be taking it far enough. Some are bemoaning the playcalling. The traditional thought is that 4 is too little, I know, but maybe that's flawed? The plays still have to get called. Maybe we could try 4 in certain categories?

Why do we put restrictions on offense? If we are concerned about offensive stats, why not open up the offense to the full playbook? Honestly, I hate that idea since there is no ability to adjust within the game. However, why restrict one side of the ball and ot the other?

Personally I think the stats are us the coaches fault more than our rules. We've had 4 or 5 solid really competitive seasons. Not sure why we are looking at changing much anyway. This is where I'm more with Shawn. If we keep the rules more consistent then the creativity can come out.

If we are not restricting PM, PL and PRD from 1st and 2nd, might as well leave it alone and change the conversation topic to more differentiation in player ratings. :)

I don't see the need to change. We are playing a a game that is 23 year old game. We aren't going to get the stats right and most of the time when we try to fix one stat we break another. I say keep rules the same unless there is a clear exploit or is completely broken. The other reason I think are stats are worse is because the game seems to reward gambling on big plays with lower percentages and is based on a time when most QBs were low 90s or lower ratings.

As for the 2-DL I don't see the problem. Yes they weaken pass happy teams. If you want to run you can run on those defenses pretty well. 2-DL are beatable and not broken.
