NFL 2026 Practice Squad Rules

For the 2026 NFL season, practice squads consist of 16 players, with an optional 17th spot for an International Player Pathway participant. Eligibility is split between up to 10 players with two or fewer accrued seasons and up to 6 unrestricted veterans.

Key 2026 Rules and Details:

Weekly Salaries: Players with two or fewer accrued seasons earn a fixed $13,750 per week, while veterans negotiate rates between $18,350 and $22,850 per week.
Game Day Elevations: Teams may elevate two practice squad players to the active roster for a single game. A player can be elevated three times per regular season before requiring a standard active roster contract.
Poaching and Signings: Other teams can sign practice squad players directly to their 53-man active roster, but not to another practice squad. The signed player must remain on the active roster for at least three games.
Protection Rules: The previous rule allowing teams to protect four players from poaching weekly has been removed; any eligible player can be signed by another team.
Roster Construction: Squads are typically filled with players released during final cuts who clear waivers, starting after the 1:00 PM ET waiver deadline on the Monday following the final roster cuts.

and reduce the 'must be on the active roster' to 3 games like the NFL - we currently require the whole season

I also like that they limit promoting to active roster to three times - after that, can't be on PS anymore

We are NOT going to play musical chairs with the Practice Squad (in for a game, out for a game).

It's nice that people are keeping up with this stuff, but I'm with Charlie. Let's keep it simple. I would not be against allowing up to 5 vets, but the musical chairs is a no to me. I can see moving a guy to cover for an injury, but I wouldn't see moving a guy back and forth.

Keep in mind PS players in the NFL develop a bit during the season where as our guys only "grow" when we run TC. It wouldn't be out of the question to sign a guy that is a little green to the PS and then bump him up after he gets about a half season of experience.

I agree with Charlie.

In the real NFL, the player has to be cut to go on the practice squad and is a free agent. There are no matching or contracts for Practice Squad players. So when you put that player you just drafted on the PS, he loses his contract, so he would have to be resigned in the offseason to stay on your team. The NFL is 37.5% of vets on the PS, 37.5% would be 3 to 4 vets with our 10.

Maybe we could increase the age for non-vets since most PS in our league don't really have accrued seasons (6 games on (active/inactive roster, IR, or PUP list).

I don't see the need for a major change in our PS rules, But expanding from 3 to 5 veterans allowed is a reasonable move I think I would vote for that.
