PRD proposal

Postby Steve-Buffalo Bills » Mon Jan 13, 2025 10:09 pm

Just because Shawn is being obstinate and disagreeable for the sake of being unprogressive, I’ll add one more. :P

I propose we limit PRD to Hail Mary situations only.

Hail Mary situations being defined as:
0-15 seconds left in the 1st half regardless of score
Under 2 min left in the second half if tied or behind

As part of this, PRD becomes an optional category that only requires at least 2 plays if used. Only one of the two plays can be a timed lob pass.

Obviously we will all need to agree on the best definition of Hail Mary situations. What I suggested above is a start.

What do you guys consider to be Hail Mary situations in the 1st half and 2nd half? Did I get them right?

Agree. PRD should only be allowed in real Hail Mary situations, which for us best equates to <1 minute to go in either half.

I believe it was James who argued once during Friday Night Lights that it doesn't make sense that our defenses have to defend against a PRD on 3rd and 2. He's absolutely right, as it is completely unrealistic.

These are our Hail Mary plays, they should only be allowed in situations where a real NFL team would throw a Hail Mary. It makes zero sense to allow these calls on a 3rd & 2 with 12:14 remaining in the half.

Because of timing where snapping the ball just outside of 0:15 seconds can result in not getting another play off, and because NFL teams sometimes run multiple Hail Marys in a row, PRD should only be allowed in the 1st half when <1 minute remains in the half and in the 2nd half when the offensive team is tied or losing and <1 minute remains in the half, when between the OFF-5 and DEF-0. Down and Distance are irrelevant.

I think we are making sensible arguments here for limiting the use of PRDs to Hail Mary situations, but ultimately the “No Changes Syndicate” will fight us on this because it is disruptive to their existing profiles.

As such, I think the only change we can ask is to no longer include PRD as a required category. It should be an optional category that still requires 4 plays if used.

Considering its use will continue to be in situations beyond Hail Mary situations for the foreseeable future, it is important that we require 4 plays still because this provides sufficient randomization on what is called.

Don't give up on limiting to hail mary situations, I think that's the most important part. I wasn't sure if lowering requirement to 2 plays was a good idea, cause I wasn't sure if that opens up for abuse. Until I hear arguments, I still like both limiting to Hail Mary situations, and making PRD optional with 2 play minimum.

I discussed this a season or two ago. At that time the new rule to allow timed passes in the category improved the completion % too high in comparison to the NFL and my opinion. They also started being used in the unrealistic situations. There was no agreement at that time to change. The completion % has come down and in my game planning I see less use in the odd situations.

I still think the odd situations in commish sim such as 3rd and 1 use in the middle of the half are problematic. I could get behind a change in definition or use parameters depending on what they are. We would be tweaking a very small issue and get it more realistic.

I think a simple rule change would be to limit its use when > 5 min in both halves to 10+ situations only unless down by 8+. Its use is allowed on 3rd down 0-10 only if behind by 8+ . For < 5 min situations anything is allowed anyway, so no need to regulate that.

Keeps it simple.

For reference the 45 target air yard completion percentage in the NFL over 4 years was a little under 25%

This is far simpler in my mind:
1st half: Under 1-minute remains
2nd half: Under 1-minute remains and tied or losing.
