Rare Player Talent Enhancement idea

Postby Dean-Atlanta » Sun Feb 07, 2021 8:52 pm

The gradual lowering from players ratings via the draft is a good thing but we should recognize the player that comes along occasionally that is truly rare talent (e.g. Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, Emmitt smith) that are players that are clearly the ones that should be given the maxx ratings out ratings scale allows, and there should only be a few such players every couple draft classes in the PNFL.

It is clear, however, that some rare talent gets average to less than great. Let alone rare, ratings as PNFL players,. I'll use Patrick Mahomes in the PNFL as an example. Look at his current PBFL ratings:

A QB2 6 Patrick Mahomes OK 7 0-0 0 79 78 79 95 69 85 90 83
80 79 80 95 70 86 91 84

It is no coincidence he is currently QB2 with those ratings, and he was signed to my team last season for ONE point as a free agent. Given his mobility, running speed, and amazing ability to evade sacks, he should have 81 81 81 pots in SP—AG. His ST should definitely be 96 and his EN at 87 potential. He is 91-84 IN-DI but should be 92-84. He would need 7 points added to pots to upgrade him to those ratings, 1 SP, 2 AC, 1 AG, 1 ST, 1 HA, 1 EN, 0 DI.

Here is my proposed idea for improvement of that player with rare talent in the NFL who is vastly under-rated in skill ratings in our league.

It would apply to ONE player per team, every FIVE seasons, so we don't boost many players in skill ratings.

That one player would be one clearly under rated, would receive 7 points in added pots and actuals, without exceeding the allowed maxx ratings. Patrick Mahomes would improve as shown below:

A QB2 6 Patrick Mahomes OK 7 0-0 0 80 80 80 96 70 86 91 83
81 81 81 96 71 87 92 84

While this would be done to one player, the team doinf it would select one over-rated players to be dropped 7 points in actual and potential ratings. To prevent from down grading and dumping, the team would be required to keep and resign (and not trade) the down graded player for five season.

The upgrade would be done in off-season, and would cost the team 7 FA points to do it, and it would be optional. The upgraded player would have his salary increased to the max salary for the position, or the one calculated according to his skill ratings.

What do you all think?

I hate the idea. The highest rated prospects are the highest rated in the draft files mostly. The names have never corresponded to actual ratings and I do not want to turn the draft into fantasy football.

Correct, the names were never intended to correspond to actual performance in the NFL. Briefly, I randomly develop the POTs and randomly discount them to develop the ACTs. Then I tweak the numbers so that the Draft Pool is spread out over the existing player pool. When it looks like I have a decent distribution within a position I sort the prospects by highest to lowest POTs. Then I add the NFL names in the order that they were drafted. Keep in mind that we split each NFL Draft into two PNFL Drafts. As such, Joe Macho, the top-rated speed CB in the NFL might not end up being the top speed CB in the PNFL because of the randomness. NFW am I going to try to match actual specific attributes of NFL players with PNFL players. It is nice to have top NFL players match up with actual PNFL players, but that is more coincidence. As such, a boy named Sue might actually be the best LB in the PNFL draft. Deal with it.

Lets not get so obsessed with realism then, which clearly is lacking when one of the best QBs in years in the NFL is perhaps barely able to hold down a roster spot here.

You're proposing Madden. LOL. Get new rating every year.

Oh does that mean we should drop your starting running back to all 10s since last I knew he worked at EA not NFL.
No you signed him knowing his numbers so accept the numbers he has if you didn't want him then don't sign him. Besides Mahomes's numbers will come down a lot the next few season as his cap number goes up from 5 million. He is talented beyond belief but don't get it confused. The reason KC has been so good is they paying their starting QB 5 million a year.

They are have 45 players signed for next year and are already 11-17 million over the cap depending on where you look. That team will not be as good as they were this year next.
