Just finished season #2. I will have to make some adjustments going into the season 3 draft since some teams drafted 3 and 4 FBs in the last draft.

Another good season stats wise.

Dallas defeated Pittsburgh 20-13 in the Super Bowl.

Points ranged from 550 to 300
QB ratings ranged from 101 to 65 (Top half over 85)
40 receivers over 1,000 yards
23 HBs over 1,000 yards
Sacks from 65 to 26 (Top individual 17)
KO returns from 24 to 21
PR from 16 to 8

That same cookie cutter nature is why I always wanted to trade out of the top rounds and acquire more picks. The difference in the draft wasn't that great from round 1 to round 2 and 3. You guys are basically speaking to what I had figured out a few years ago and started experimenting with. The plan was to not over spend on guys who were only off by a few pts when I could take a lesser guy and still be competitive. It worked somewhat and probably better if I had put more effort into my ppp.

The main reason it took me so long to join this league was that when I looked at the rosters they all looked the same. And all the ratings were maxed! It took the GM function completely out of the game, something I enjoy very much.

Steve uses the XFBS as an example of how Rating spreads don’t work but that was a very different league. It really was designed to build super teams like colleges have historically. The National Champion got the first pick in the draft and the top teams were able to get the best skill players along with no Salary cap. By the end when there were huge point spreads between teams the league was half full so crushing the unowned teams was very doable.

I would love to see a wide rating spread but you would have to keep a salary cap so no one could build a super team. But what you could build is a pass oriented team with a great QB and wide receivers but then you might have a swiss cheese defense to go with it and vice versa if you wanted to build the Iron Curtain defense. You could build a team that suits your style and what you like to watch. Also as Jerry says we all use mostly the same plays and now we’d use very different gameplans to fit with our team’s individual style. As with any change there would be unintended consequences so I would make this a 3 year or so experiment with the ability to revert the ratings if necessary.

Am I missing something?
Yes, VPNFL ratings and VPNFL profiles are design to produce NFL like stats when you assign each team a profile and plan at the beginning of the season. This has been known since VPNFL was release because they were designed to do that. Charlie I believe worked on it if I remember right. The problem is we have custom plays, plans and profiles. This basically destroys that effect. While I find it very interesting it really doesn't mean it would changed anything for this league.

That being said what I would think be interesting if someone wanted to do it. Is run a parallel league using current rosters where you submit your choice of VPNFL profiles and plans at the start of the season and only be allowed to submit RMupdates each week. Kind of how good of a GM are you time thing. I think it could be fun to watch PNFL game vs PNFL-GM game.

Also the GM side of the game. I would argue isn't worth your time in real PNFL it is profile and plans. That being said I happen to enjoy it. I built teams just to build them.

@Barney - I agree with you when you talk about teams being able to create more of an identity with more variance in ratings.

@James - my solitaire doesn't use a set PPP for each team. The profile is set for each team, but the gameplans are picked randomly based on the percentages I selected on the Team Profile page for each team.

I create several profiles in order to give teams an identity. Some teams have a run heavy offense, some balance and some pass heavy. Some teams focus more on medium passes and some short. On defense, some teams are more run aggressive calling more RRs, some are more balanced and some are more conservative calling more RLs.

Now, I have several different gameplans that I saved in the STOCK folder. I replaced the STOCK gameplans with custom gameplans. However, since I saved the custom gameplans as OFFPA1, OFFPA2, etc., I theoretically can have 36 custom gameplans on offense and defense that all teams can from each week. The teams randomly pick a gameplan I've saved based on the percentage I input on the TEAM PROFILE page. EX: If I have a team set with 50% Run Aggressive and 50% Run Balanced, the computer will random pick 1 of 12 custom gameplans I saved in the STOCK folder.

For defensive gameplans, all gameplans saved as Pass Aggressive, Pass Balanced and Pass Conservative are all 4-3 based defenses. All gameplans saved as Run Aggressive, Run Balanced and Run Conservative are 3-4 based defenses. This way, I can create identities for these teams, yet still allow random plans to be picked.

All of this adds a great sense of variability/realism since even though the play call tendencies won't change from week to week, the teams will absolutely call different plays each week. Unless, the teams happen to randomly select the same gameplans.

Even if we never change a rating in the PNFL, it might be worth considering the random gameplan process I have created for our open teams.

I searched a bit on my side but without much success...

Open teams are random now. I also tweaked it a bit to help keep the identity closer for each. For example, Philly will be based on the last William Championship NYG PPP season and the alternate will vary away a little with both having a passing identity. Carolina will be the same basic as they have there own lunch pail identity and the alternate a little more open on the passing game side. The plan was to have each open team have a different identity. Before we got new and returning owners, New Orleans was going to be the Rob Denver style and New England was going to bring the Jets style.
