Draft News - Chargers begin private workouts for potential #1 picks

Postby Steve-LA Chargers » Thu Feb 17, 2022 10:21 am

Trevor Lawrence held his workout at Clemson’s indoor facility Thursday morning for the LA Chargers. Lawrence said the workout was one that was brought up on short notice, so he had about a week to prepare. That still didn’t stop him from putting on an impressive display, which included a couple rockets down the field.

Over the next few weeks before the draft the Chargers are expected to have private workouts with CB Jaycee Horn, WR J'Marr Chase, LB Jamin Davis, T Penei Sewell, DE Joseph Ossai, HB Travis Etienne, and HB Khalil Herbert.

Coach Corbett didn't exactly make it sound like Lawrence was a lock for the #1 pick overall despite the impressive workout, "We are quite set at every position including QB right now. We acquired Drew Lock from the Jets for a second round pick last season. If we draft any position other than QB, it will give us a franchise player who can likely start right away. We are definitely giving strong consideration to the other phenomenal talents in this draft class. If we do draft Trevor, we know we have an amazing player though."

No matter who the Chargers pick, it just might hurt one of the teams drafting after them. Several teams drafting in the early first round have gaping holes at the highly sought after positions like QB, WR, CB, and LB. The draft is a chess game with every team in this league and it should be interesting to see what happens over the weeks before the draft.

The Charlotte, NC sports talk station is reporting a rumor that Trevor Lawrence is petitioning the NCAA to return to college if drafted #1 by the Chargers. Apparently, he has no interest in playing on the West Coast.

I think it's a negotiation ploy...

Given that Seattle drafted Zach Wilson in the last draft, Lawrence is hoping to be drafted by Chicago to eventually replace Sam Darnold if the Chargers opt to draft a WR or a CB or a HB instead.
