NFL 2020 stats show success on 35% 6-10 and 51% 2-5. Down and yardage management matters

Hey Dean,

Based on what you said about the PML play in your example, my thought is should should have PML and PMM plays in your profile that average over 10 yards per reception. I you use PML plays on 1st down that average less than 10 yards a reception, you are really using short pass plays as PML. Increase that percentage of your PSL plays in your profile and change the PML plays in your plan so that average over 10 yards per pass. This allows you to use PML (and PMM) along with 3rd 6-10 plus without the issue you are describing.

Just a suggestion..

That was supposed to say, "If you use PML plays", not "I use PML plays."

Too many of our medium pass plays have too high a percentage of incomplete passes, sacks, INTs, etc. An offense heavily dominated by medium passing plays leads to way too many 3rd and 6-10 (and 3rd and 10+) downs that are not converted, and ultimately punts and FGs.

Look at our QB stats from last season:

The PNFL will never be able to match the current NFL due to YAC. FBPRO has less YAC due to software, but keeping it on this discussion, the top QB in the league last season threw PML a lot on 1st down. I noted earlier in this topic that down and yardage management matters. It is common sense that if you throw PM on every down you will likely have less first downs, but conversely you can have more chunk plays like the Jets did last season. Look at play OR4XRp90 for example; only hit 50% but avg over 18 yards a completion. DC5Z01R is similar. The Jets scored a ton of points, because they also managed 2nd down and still had a lot of under 6 yard 3rd downs to pick up when the chunk play did not work. Based on last season, the Chiefs called a lot of PML, but many avg under 10 yards and had no more completion % than the Jets. The Chiefs then went PM on 2nd down more than the Jets. Hence, the Chiefs are in 3rd and long more which is a way lower chance at a first down. Also the longer the QB holds the ball the more sacks and INTs.

No. Hell no. Specific plays are a commish nightmare. Guaranteed to result in play not founds and game crashes. I am totally against this as it would only create a headache for Rich on game days.

I believe you have to stop comparing stats in this game to stats in today's NFL. A better comparison would be stats of the '80s and early '90s, back when the game was created.

EX: In 1985, there were 2 teams that threw for over 4,000 yards, San Diego and Miami.

SD had a 61% comp% and avg 7.3 Y/A
MIA had a 60% comp% and avg 6.9 Y/A

The Y/A were both the highest in the NFL that season. If you look at our top 3 or 4 passing teams, these stats are very comparable.

The game is based on randomness, which makes week-to-week more unpredictable, frustrating, fun (sometimes). For me to approve "specific plays" in any situation, I would want to have 100% agreement by all owners, and even then I would probably flip a coin. I think that this thread is DOA.

We will need to remember, for future rule change discussions, this new standard for making league rules, that 100 percent agreement of all owners will be needed to change rules or add new unnecessary rules.

Not necessary for other rule changes. As I said before, specific plays are a potential nightmare only for commishes. Charlie has every right to require 100% agreement for their use as opposed to other rule changes. Considering I will always vote for what’s best for the commishes, as he said, dead thread now.
