2046 Draft pool thoughts

Postby Brian-Broncos » Wed Feb 12, 2025 4:37 pm

Just a suggestion for next year to reduce the size of the draft pool back to what was created for the 2045 draft. The pool size for 2045 felt just about perfect. And looking back at that draft now, even that pool could have been shrunk by another 2-6 players in most positions. Shrinking the pool would hopefully save Charlie a bunch of time as well as prevent our Free Agent pool from growing so excessively large, like it currently is.

I get Charlie is trying to balance giving us a choice versus creating an excessive pool size, but think about how it compares to the NFL draft: By the end of an NFL draft, I can't imagine there are very many players remaining in each position that a team considers worthy of being drafted, meaning the teams have very little choice within a position. Also, any undrafted players rarely make a team and it's virtually unheard of for an undrafted player to make a team a year or two after their draft. Therefore, the players that become undrafted free agents in the PNFL should also be quite useless and there just isn't a need to have 11 quite useless DEs ending up in the free agent pool, for example.

Thoughts?

I do not believe the large amount of FA matter eventually. Once the spread is at its max and the old players age/retire out it won't matter if there is 10K in FA. I get it is not ideal currently though. I have discussed with Charlie I think some positions are too small at times. Again, if the spread is more, the number does not actually matter. I think without enough draftees teams draft other positions only due to the number. Let people have crappy players to take. Now this season the QB was what I call almost perfect. Not too big not too small.

3 QBs taken out of 11, leaving 8 just sitting in the free agent pool where in 8 seasons some will be start-able. Just adds eight to the FA pool to have to sift through for eight years and then then some of these guys become actually start-able.

Going on a tangent here, but why would these guys become start-able, eight seasons from now?! It makes no sense that 8 seasons from now three of these guys could be 3rd QBs, along with some from last season's pool, and some from next season's pool. Just makes the FA pool WAY WAY too strong. There'll never be a reason to spend more than a point or two for a guy when were still populating the pool with nobodies that could actually start in 6, 7, 8, or 9 seasons from now. Again, this is crazy.

Charlie: I do like how you made the extra QBs pretty much with such low Actuals that they aren't really boost-able.

The QB's in FA do not get a TC to improve. No one will spend points to keep them on contract They will never be an issue. Sitting hurts nothing........

I agree that the spread needs to be POT's and not ACT, but the QB's this draft will never have more than a couple on rosters after a couple of seasons.

I'm validating with Rich that FA TC is one than mainly just maintains ratings
