One of the newer coaches, Frederic has me a very good question today.
Given that there is no salary cap, what is the purpose of the tags?

He makes a good point, without a cap should we keep using them?
They now only serve as a way for teams to sign 3 players essentially for free.
I suppose asking coaches to give up this perk is akin to asking politicians to enact term limits.

So, I ask you, do we still need them in a non cap environment?

Not sure it is a perk. The tags existed well before the $$ Salary Cap. The points are now back to being the sole cap as they were for more season than I can remember. Dropping the tags is a huge change in the cap. With the already 15% lower points allocation, this would be another similar 15% cut from the original allocation. Not sure a 30% cut to the original points needs to occur.
