I know some think that the reason why we have so many so-called clones of successful plays is that some coaches want to load their game plans with a lot of similar plays believing this makes a more effective game plan. So there is the idea that we should have more rules and regulations against doing this kind of thing. But here's why I think we should resist the temptation to make more rules and have more regulations, and let the market decide so to speak.
Let's say that someone loads their past medium categories with four versions of the spider plays in one roll out play. This is a very unbalanced game planning you might even say it's unrealistic. But here's why we do not need to ban such a practice in the rules. If the opposing team scouts that plan and run some tests and sims and finds the best defenses to stop that playbook full of spider plays, that team will easily win that game by shutting down those place in rendering the team using them ineffective. That is the built-in natural punishment for running an excessively unbalanced and unrealistic game plan, someone will scout you and destroy your offense. This is why I do not think we need to regulate these plays.
But there is also another reason why some coaches may want to so-called clone them. They may come up with a variation that completes more often or completes for more yards per catch or get sacked less often due to better pass protection or gets intercepted less often due to the design of the receiver routes and the timing of the quarterback in order of looking for receivers. In this instant it is an improved play and should be used. If the coach who designed the original Spider play is designing the new one then I think the new one should be submitted as a replacement to the old less effective ones so that we are not cluttering the play files with old and ineffective plays.
