Then should the XR be free anymore? If we are going to add a pick component then the XR should have to be paid from the teams cap if they keep them. If we are going to fully mirror the NFL the team owning the rights has to pay for the player. Why would they get 3 free years. If we go full NFL then lets go full NFL. The team owning the rights needs to have some skin in the game depending on the decision points.

Restricted free agents are players with three years of accrued NFL seasons. Unlike unrestricted free agents, restricted FAs can have their markets limited due to four different tenders.

A team that places a tender on a restricted free agent can match an offer sheet from another club. If a draft pick value is attached to the tender, the original team can receive compensation if it lets the player walk.

Like the franchise tag, a restricted tender protects a team from losing internal talent. Teams can place first-round, second-round, and right-of-first-refusal tenders on players. Each tender is a one-year contract with a value based on the level of the tender.

How Much Does Each Restricted Tender Cost?
Each restricted tender’s price point is based on the NFL salary cap. The salaries are relatively expensive, as they compensate the player for his inability to move freely to another team.

They also create leverage against the incumbent team deciding on the tender. For instance, a team might want to tender an up-and-coming backup offensive tackle, but they might not want to pay the price of a second-round restricted tender to retain his services.

The NFL set the 2024 salary cap at $255.4 million in late February and simultaneously announced next season’s RFA tender values:

First-round tender: $6.822 million
Second-round tender: $4.89 million
Original round tender: $3.116 million
Right-of-first refusal tender: $2.985 million

The values of each tag can hinder a team from placing a higher tender on a player. Suppose a team likes a running back who is expected to enter restricted free agency. In that case, a general manager might be more inclined to reach a long-term deal ahead of the new league year instead of paying the value of the second-round tender.

Well then there will be no compensation because if we introduce compensation I think we should put in the 3 years or less.

But Donovon is wrong compensation is determine by the tender offer that is made for the restricted free agent. I propose this rule

Restricted Free Agent tag is removed

Free Agents that have 3 or less in years in the game file can be offered a tender offer for a 3 year contract

4 points 1st round tender
3 point 2nd tender
2 for original pick

Free Agency is open for players open for 1 week. Restricted Free agent bidding is as now but starts at tender offer

1. No team offers Restricted Free Agent team a contract The original team pays the tender offer.
2. If a teams bid The original team has the right to match. If they match they pay the match amount and keep player. If they don't they get the pick from the winning bid team based on tender offer.

This is the closest we can get to NFL Restricted Free Agency. Personally I rather keep it like it is but this is the only proposal I will support if we want to introduce compensation.

I also think we should fix franchise tag

NFL teams only get one franchise tag that has 3 different types

There are three types of franchise tags: the non-exclusive tag, exclusive tag and transition tag.

NON-EXCLUSIVE TAG: This tag allows the player to sign an offer sheet with another team. The original team has the right to match the offer or receive two first-round draft picks in compensation if the player leaves. This is the most common type of tag.

EXCLUSIVE TAG: This tag completely binds the player to his team. His agent is prohibited from seeking an offer sheet.

TRANSITION TAG: This tag works like the nonexclusive franchise tag, except it only provides the original team the right to match the other team's offer. If the original team decides not to offer a matching bid, it gets no compensation when the player leaves.

Once a player is tagged, the two sides have until July 15 to sign a long-term contract or, by NFL rule, the player will play on the one-year deal (or hold out).

My suggestion is simple

Franchise tags (1 year contract) are this

Exclusive cost 2 points
Non-exclusive cost (cost 1 point if no one signs him, If someone offers a contract you can match or get 2 1st)
Transition tag cost free( you can match offers

All Free Agents 3 or under can be offered a tender offer of a 1 year contract. Player can only be a restricted free agent once.
1.5 1st round
1 2nd round
.5 for round drafted.

All but the exclusive tag players are allowed to be bid on once top bid is determine original team is allowed to match if they do they pay for the match contract. If they don't they get compensation based on tender offer. If no one bids player is signed for tender offer.

As far as picks I say we take them from the season that can't be traded or if they don't have the pick the offer is void

Yep, I agree. I rather keep everything as it is now because I don't have to think about it.

The thing is the NFL rarely uses any of the tag or tender offers.

https://www.footballdb.com/transactions/free-agents.html?yr=2024

As you can see this last season there was a total of

7 Restrictive Free Agents(5 teams San Fran and Seattle had 2 each)
6 Franchise tagged players
1 Transitional tagged player

NY Giants were the only team to have a Franchise player and a Restrictive Free Agent

Out of 32 teams only 11 teams just over 1/3 of the league used a tender offer or a tag.

Tags and PS are the way they are because they are easy and who wants to g throught he headache of dealing with it. Franchised tag players usually don't sign a long term deal and it normally creates a divided between the player and the team.
