Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
I proposed exactly what Steve has proposed. Restrict PM, PL and PRD from 1st and 2nd down between 1 to 10 yards to go.

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
Only point is defending extra pass happy teams, which BTW use the same PM plays on 3rd down as 1st and 2nd. Just noting that 2-4-5 type formations are in the NFL now and not just 3rd down. I don't want them 100% of the time either, but they are realistic.

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
We have identified this before, that the frequency of those defenses in the NFL is not far off from what we have.
Don't restrict, innovate.
We don't suddenly have an issue because one team used certain plays with success.
If you want to pass on a team running 2-4-5 defense all day, that's your fault. Gouge them and make them not look at that formation again.

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
I think we are missing the point here. The commissioner has already said this is a realism issue he is determined to address. He has already said the 2DL PS plays are gone. He is asking for us to help him decide on a course of action that reduces the need for removing the 2 DL PM plays too.
The only way we keep 2 DL and meet the stated goal is to either:
1) ban PM, PL and and PRD from 1st and 2nd down in profiles
or
2) limit 2 DL plays to 50% of PM, PL and PRD categories in the plan
#1 is the easiest way for us to prevent and detect their usage. #2 requires the commish to review plans far more than he should have to ... simply put, the argument of keeping them 'as is' is not going to be considered. The third option is to require RM and RL on 1st downs instead of banning PM, PL and PRD, but this is an option that easily circumvents the goal by a coach who uses PM10 RM1 RL1 weights.
I you don't like options 1 or 2, what's your 4th, 5th and 6th option etc. ???

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
I see it similar to you as how to do it issue at this point Steve. I figured a 50% solution would be easy as I do not believe anyone would intentionally violate it, easy on the coaches, and if a log seemed to indicate an issue, the commish could check it. I also have no issue with them be called on 1st and 2nd down sometimes. Although the doggone game will do some crazy play calling sometimes no matter the PPP %. I do defer to You, Charlie, and Rich on the rules and enforcing them. That is by far y'alls expertise as being the ones doing it. I never want to increase that pain either.

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
I think that you guys misunderstood my "simple approach"!
You cannot call any 2-DL pass defense on 1st or 2nd down. However, you can call any other pass defense on 1st or 2nd down, just not 2-DL.
I believe that this is the easy way to do it. However, I have a couple of observations:
1) I think that we lift this restriction when the clock is under five-minutes to play in a half; and
2) I think that we also lift the restriction when the defense is inside their own 5-yard line.

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
I'm confused. If you can't call a 2 DL defense on 1st or 2nd down, how are we leaving the 2 DL plays in their current category? Are you saying we stick with PM, PL and PRD eligible on 1st/2nd downs as long as they do not use 2 DL plays in any of those categories?
I may have misunderstood something.

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
I think Charlie is warming up to the idea of not allowing PM, PL and PRD to be used on 1st and 2nd 0-10 with 5 minutes or more to go in both halves.
Easiest way to regulate this as he doesn't have to check for 50% and basically leaves coaches with RZR (once 2 DLs are removed), RR, RM, RL and PS (once 2 DLs are removed) for those downs. People can easily submit their favorite 3DL/4DL PM plays to be added to RL if needed.

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
Meant to say can add their favorite 3DL/4DL PM plays to RL or PS.
Did you guys know there is zero distinction between RL and PS other than that PS is required in 3rd 2-5 situations? Choosing to save a play as PS or RL is really a decision to either make it always available on 3rd 2-5 or only whenever you like to call RL.

Re: 2-DL Pass Defenses
I did not think it all the way through! In this regard, I do not want people flooding the RL category with their favorite Pass Medium plays by only allowing RM and RL on 1st and 2nd downs. As such, I am back to two choices:
1) No more than 50% of the Pass categories can be 2-Dl defenses; or
2) Just leave everything as is and just play football.
BTW, besides making the PNFL more realistic relative to the NFL, the other reason that I was considering a change is that the 2-DL pass defenses are fairly effective against the pass, and there has been ongoing complaints about the anemic nature of our passing game. That is why I thought that a reasonable compromise was to limit 2-DL to no more than 50% in any given category. No QB this past season had a Rating over 96.4, and only four QBs had a rating in the 90s. As such, I am still thinking that #1 is the best solution, if we go forward.
