4th down rules question

Postby Brian-Broncos » Thu May 28, 2026 4:33 pm

With > 5 minutes remaining in the half:
1. If I'm going for it on 4th down, it sounds like three categories with weight > 0 are needed, is this correct?

2. What about when punting or field goals are involved: Can I have two categories with a chance to punt, each with weight 1, and then use a single go-for-it category in the third slot with a weight of 10?

Here are the relevant rules:
 With more than five minutes left in a Half, each profile situation must have THREE different offensive Play categories, each with a chance of being called. In other words, each category must have a number other than zero.
 Punting and Field Goals need only one category.

I have always assumed this meant Punt and FG are exempt from the rule, as long as they are at 100% of the odds to be called

This would be fine. They only need 1 category, but if you want to use more than 1 for strategy, you can.

Field Goal/Punt/Run Clock are exempt from the 3 category rule.
But, once you bring in another play type, you are required to use 3 even if one of them is Field Goal/Punt/Run Clock

One caveat on defense, with under 5 minutes left, only 2 categories are required.

Can you clarify this in the rules since it only says " Punting and Field Goals need only one category." - there's nothing specifying what you've advised above, so its ambiguous. Not trying to be difficult, but 1-2 seasons down the road its easy to forget.
