Anti-tanking

Postby Barney - Vikings » Thu Feb 26, 2026 5:52 pm

Some good points were made about tanking on the podcast this week. There’s no penalty for tanking as there would be in the real NFL and I think that needs to be addressed. The NBA already has a lottery pick system. That’s something we could consider, also I like James‘s suggestion about deciding the Draft order after the trading deadline.

I personally like something similar to the NBA system. The 10 non-playoff teams go into a pool. The team with the worst record gets 10 shares, second worst record gets nine shares, etc. down to one share for the 10th worst record. That’s 55 possibilities. Rich could spin the wheel for the first five picks and then we would just go off record for the sixth through tenth.

I would be interested in everyone’s comments and then propose a rule based on that.

What penalty does the NFL have for tanking?

Not sure what started all this, as I wasn't even aware anyone was tanking in this league. But I think the worst team should get the first pick and I dont really care if people want to tank. Its never really been a problem in the NFL, but especially the PNFL. A single pnfl football player with pre determined max attributes cannot change your franchise. There are no John Elways here. Only Jake Lockers, made great by their coaches

I do like the NBA Lottery system, and feel like if we have teams actively tanking that it does impact the league. Yes, if you analyze the plays used by teams during the season, it can be very obvious in some situations. To Dan's point, one player at 1-1 may not make a difference, but what if the same team did that 5-10 seasons in a row? Right now the only thing stopping them would be league leadership.

It depends. If a coach, GM, and Ownership are in lockstep about it, there is zero penalty for tanking. I'm thinking specifically of the Suck for Luck campaign. However, if a team does something like that there could be disgruntled players who want to leave, but the coach/ownership isn't going to probably go anywhere.

I don't understand the mentality of losing on purpose. I can't do it. I hate losing more than I like winning. I'd quit before I tried losing on purpose.

We have teams that could have easily had Top 5 picks for 15 seasons in a row. However, they kept trading those picks away to playoff team.

But, I would like to think those were earned. I know mine were.

There is a team who did tank at the end of the season last year.

There isn't a rule, but there is a cost in the player's response or fan's response. Like I said on the podcast, Crosby for the Raiders was talking about wanting out at the end of the season. Coaches and GMs can get fired for losing, which we can't.

For me, it is not about running a competitive PPPs. There were two teams who clearly were not submitting competitive PPPs the last 3 weeks. I'm pretty positive one was actively tanking. Deciding to run the same PPP for the final weeks, I don't think, that is a problem. It is the teams that are designing PPPs to lose.
