What I see on the tags is one owner attempting to make all the other owners pay something for their tags. Not going to mention any names, you figure it out!

I say we need to end the carryover of points starting with the next offseason. With everyone starting with the same amount of points, it levels the playing field and you don't have to worry about people being able to outbid you just because they have three times the points.

Now to be fair, we do need a solution to not punish those who have managed their points and have that surplus, so a solution will need to be found that is fair to all. However, we need to get to zero carry over as soon as possible.

Getting to zero carryover points would still put some teams behind. The teams with tons of points will be able to extend out all of the guys we really need to for several years and lower the need for extensions over the next few seasons. Then it will still be unfair for a while. Eventually that will run out, but that is a long term solution to making the points equal every season in the future...

One thing that would be nice to "waste" points on. Allow the teams to purchase a duplicate player in the draft. Use a scale like this:

10 points (1st round player)
8 points (2nd round player)
7 points (3rd round player)

The new player would be created with the same attributes, only have a different name. My guess is that would be good incentive for coaches to use up some of the points.

I don not think end carryover. NFL teams do not spend the same amount each season. I think there should be a max like 40 to 60, but not zero as contracts are not lined up each season. They cycle up and down no different than the NFL. We can get there easy. For example SNS 2045 70 max, 2046 60 max or something similar. Simple and does it slowly over time.

The other way to help control would be to end point trading with the above. Solves lots of issues

The key thing to remember is coaches are not forced to use tags. If coaches have "must keep" players on their roster, they should restructure the contract instead of tagging the player.

The issue I see across the league is too many coaches restructure contracts of 4th and 5th string players instead of signing similar players from the FA pool or draft pool. This practice reduces the number of points those coaches can use to restructure their 1st and 2nd string players to longer term contracts.
