Jerry-Redskins wrote:Lean toward James on this one. I get the idea to create a way to drop created plays into categories similar to the pass zone principle and the run part fits that pretty well. I worry a little it may turn into only pass D's being created. I'm guilty of keeping minimal S on my roster as CB's have been more important on D. Of course, I got ran over this season

I'm interested to see what others think as ultimately I do not think the proposal is a major change and does create more of a way to define RL and PS, but the defense play fixes going on will likely already have an impact on next season.

No worries there for me. I'm creating new defenses with 3 DLs, 2 or more LBs, and 2-3 safeties. and all of them fully legal on thew bump issues and woith 3 men defending the LOS.

I think going into the future, defenses dropping 2-3 DLs into coverage or using 7 CBs, other than PRD and maybe PL, will be liabilities on defense.

If we want to vote in 1 S required, I'd be for that, but I don't think requiring two would be a good idea. What if I want to run a 4-4 ? You only have three DBs there and you will want two CB's leaving only one S.

How about...

for running plays RL,RM,RR:

4 DL, 2 LB, 1 S
3 DL, 2 LB, 2 S
2 DL, 3 LB, 2 S
2 DL. 2 LB, 3 S

still leaves option of using 4 CBs

I would vote for Option A between those choices as outlined by Steve.

Considering the diversity in the NFL these days it seems to me that the addition of the Safety is appropriate.

Vote A

I appreciate the off-season evolution and forward thinking, changes that are within reason and logical without much disruption. This falls into that category for me.

Other requirements:
 At least 5 Players (ANY) must have PASS-FOCUSED defense
 At least three players (DLs, LBs, and/or DBs) must defend the LOS.
 In 2DL formations, at least one of the two DLs must defend the LOS. As such, one DL is permitted to drop into pass coverage.

Pass Medium
Minimum players: 2DL-2LB-5CB | 3DL-2LB-5DB | 4DL-2LB-5DB
 Require a minimum of 2DLs and 2LB
 Must have 5DBs but no more than 7DBs allowed
Other requirements:

 At least three players (DLs, LBs, and/or DBs) must defend the LOS.

 No DB requirement, but no more than 7DBs allowed
Other requirements:
 At least 5 Players (ANY) must have PASS-FOCUSED defense
 At least three DLs must defend the LOS

Hope this breakdown makes it much easier to visualize. All of it came from our existing rules with amendments made from Option A, so don't get all critical of it. I don't truly know what the VPNFL definition of RUN FOCUSED defense versus PASS FOCUSED defense really means 100% from a logic perspective, but I'm sure Charlie will tell you if your new plays fail to meet that. :D
