Thoughts about QB ratings

While we are moving toward creating players rated differently within most positions, I do not see that happening enough with QBs. Most of o ur younger QBs coming out of the draft the last few seasons have been almost clones of Justin Fields, Trey Lance, or Zach Wilson. Yet there is much more variety of styles of QBs possible without creating too many superstar QBs or having ratings go too high.

The best recent QB created was Joe Burrow, and I think is skill ratings (potentials) are reasonable:

Based on what I saw tonight in the SB, I think Jalen Hurts should look like this:

And for Patrick Mahomes I would say these ratings:

If Michael Vick or someone as good, were created:

Michael Vick 84 86 84 94 70 87 91 83 (had had reaL life 4.3 speed that has to be a 83/86 SP/AC)

And if you cloned Tom Brady, I would think this:

Tom Brady 74 78 81 95 70 85 95 85

I know the 95/85 is outside our range on IN/DI, but Brady was outside the range of IN/DI in real life, his kind of talent in those areas is once in a generation, once per decade at best.

I see things a different way. I see what you are saying but I think the solution is to continue to focus on creating more differentiation of ratings based on our current PNFL ratings scale. If the average of all our QBs were closer to the below "MEAN" ratings, it would mean fewer players were at or close to MAX making those players that are at or close to MAX truly stand out.

The difference between a Top 18 QB and a Top 50 is 1 point in ST and 1 point in IN. The difference in a Top 18 QB and the PNFL avg is 2 points in IN, 2 points in ST and 1 point in DI.

You can see some progress being made in differentiating ratings in the last few draft classes, particularly with IN and ST. However, it is going to take a lot more drafts and a lot more retirements to move the needle.

I think you got this completely wrong Vick was more of a 90 80 on IN DI with 96 st if not 79 in DI. He didn't have the ability to read defenses but had a rocket arm.

Honestly I think if we are mirroring the NFL. The concept of a pocket QB isn't really a thing. They are all mobile with a good arm. I think the difference in QB is small difference in AC AG and ST but a wider range in SP IN and DI. You could make a case that Mahomes and Hurts I would say are more 91 or 92 in with 84 DI. I would say Allen is probably 92 in and more like 81 or 82 DI. Dax is probably 90 and 80.

That being said what I would suggest is create a wider range. I would say in todays NFL in just starting QBs there is 5 point sing at SP, DI and IN. I would say there might be 2 point different in AC, AG and ST. In backups I would say you are looking at least a point or 2 below starters. It is going to take time to get to this point.

I would say if you are looking at a QB with high SP may be we could talk about changing the number of QB runs you can have in your plan. Allen is almost the teams leading rusher.

I say the league is competitive and vibrant currently. The league is already working a deliberate paced spread in ratings. How about we enjoy what is a great era in PNFL ball and focus on making our teams better in all ways. Lets enjoy the golden goose.

Mitch is right. If most of our QBs where not so high in the ratings ranges, we could more effectively create rare talent aat times.

I think we are all doing just that, but the off-season is also a good time to re-think a lot of things and have discussions about them. I think we need to remember that, the league is going well in large part because some changes were made and improvements have been made in many areas rather than just sticking with what was the "golden goose" 10-20 seasons ago. Change is inevitable, and there is as much risk in falling behind it as there is to getting too far ahead of it.
