Player or the system?

Postby Dean-Atlanta » Thu Apr 27, 2023 9:13 pm

This week's PNFL News asks that question, in regard to its rating of Jets QB Mac Jones as the 35th talent yet he leads the league in QB rating. Is it the player or the system?

Answer is, it is BOTH. The player has to have sufficient talent to succeed in a good system. Jones has that, with solid ratings in ST, IN, DI.

Good QB + bad system = failure

Poor QB + Great system = failure

A great system can not make a bad QB into a great one. A mediocre QB can tank in a great system. Case in point, look at who Chicago is likely to start this weekend. I doubt they traded for Dak Prescott to have him sit on the bench behind under-performing Justin Fields.

He has a system, but Jones is definitely one of the best boosted QB steals ever. We will soon forget about Carr and get tired of hearing Jones is MVP.

Meanwhile in LA, Kizer has clearly lost his mojo and Herbert soon may get the reins for good. The coaching staff continues to scratch their heads at how badly the season has derailed already. Our 'system' clearly isn't working this season.

Ryan Finley has done very well in NE in their system, and I noticed Chicago started Sam Darnold, so I guess the Justin Fields experiment is over.

I read these comments and I have no idea what you guys mean by "system"
I speak from experience, I had no system. You have no system.
The system is trying to find the best plays to beat your plays.
The game comes down to play vs play on every snap.
The coaches who win more than lose put their players in position to win that battle play by play.
It's coaching.

You feel better blaming a player?
Problem is, you called the play he tried to execute.
And it's his fault?

Now, in the early days of this league the player gaps were wider so you could push more blame on the players sometimes.
But there was still the coaching aspect too.
