What good are 2-DL plays?

Postby Dean-Atlanta » Wed Aug 09, 2023 3:30 pm

Typically the difference is either a DL (typically with 64 SP/91 ST) or a LB (often with 74 SP/81 ST). Why do some think there is an advantage to having ONE defenders wioth 10 points more SP and 10 less ST?

Puts more speed on the field and another pass defender for short passes. The PNFL has been a heavier passing league. The 2 DL plays clog up the short passing lanes and defend the outside runs

Jerry is right. However, delayed runs up the middle tend to do well against those defenses.

Does that remain true when the 2-DL plays have three men defending the LOS? Aside from the speed difference of the one player,, which remains true.

That's a gamble that many would take as most don't run a draw on 3rd and 10. Also I think the SP would allow the defense to converge before the RB gets ten yards.

I've always seen them as a benefit to defend the pass by adding extra coverage guys. If you design the defense just right you can also gain some protection against outside runs.
